PNAC as a viable organization ended in 2006. Its website has recently come back online, but the more substantive story will be the following.

"What do you do if your previous organization — and the ideology behind it — has become inextricably bound in the public’s imagination to one of the worst foreign policy blunders in American history? Obviously, shut it down, and start a new organization with a new name."

BIll Kristol (with fellow neocon Dan Senor and cofounder of PNAC Robert Kagan) launched "PNAC 2.0", The Foreign Policy Initiative.

Under Bush a significant increase in funding for Africa was in the prevention of HIV, however these increases went primarily to abstinance only education and not to sexual education and contriceptive programs.  No that Obama has reinstated the policy that federal money can fund contriceptive programs does Janet think this is a more realistic approach to HIV prevention in Africa?

How does Janet feel about this in general?

  • The EU leader recently called the stimulus plans the "road to hell."  As counter parties of AIG, these banks recieved over 30 billion in US bailout money.  If the US continues to keep our own banking system afloat and dole out money to Europe it certainly is on the road to hell.  European leaders need to realize that they occupy the passenger seat on this little "road trip."  Time to get off their neo-hooverist attitude and open their wallets up too.

    on March Show Suggestions

    As I might have guessed:

    April 2nd.

"A survey of property owners and residents of three streets proposed to be renamed for Cesar Chavez found strong majorities opposed to the change.

The postcard survey, conducted by the city auditor's office, is required by the city code.

    Here are the results:

    • Broadway: support, 73; opposed, 1,276

    • Grand Avenue: support, 69; opposed, 372

    • 39th Avenue: support, 91; opposed, 694.

According to Andrew Carlstrom, city elections officer, the survey was mailed March 2, with the postcards due to the auditor April 1. The return rate was between 41.1 percent and 47.7 percent."

    on March Show Suggestions

    Show suggestion:

    Ceasar Chavez Street renaming proposal.

With the failure to rename Interstate Ave. last year, this issue has resurfaced and hearing are currently being held throughout the city.  Along Inner NE Broadway I have seen several restaurants, bars, and other businesses with petitions to stop the renaming of Broadway.  I have not seen any petitions supporting the renaming along Broadway.

I know the Interstate meetings got pretty testy, but it would be interesting to hear from businesses and neighbors that the renaming will effect.

I get the feeling that not very many people in the city are supporting the renaming effort.  I am not comfortable with the city spending money to rename streets when they can't fill potholes or as Mayor Adams said yesterday "connect communities within the UGB." In the midst of a once in a hundred year depression, is the city's focus misplaced? What kind of economic impact will this have on stuggling businesses along Grand, Broadway, or 39th ave. who will have to pay for new signs, business cards, etc.?

    Thanks for the consideration,

    on Guiding the Willamette

Can you address the Proposed Upper willamette dredging and how this project will impact the future look of the willamette river.  Does your guest support the dredging? Can dredging stir up the settled toxins from superfund sites with potentially devestating effects?

What will the economic effects of the dredging be to the greater metro region as well?

I agree wlhvlh mayor Adams is intelligent,  talented, and capable.

He has shown a great deal of intelligence when he groomed and  "made out" (sexually assaulted)  a 17 year old in a public bathroom.  I'm no prude, but that is NOT o.k.  I just hope the metro's UGB report include the urban growth that was taking place at city hall.

He has shown exactly how capable a mayor he is when he hired  the inexperienced mercury reporter Amy Ruiz to be his sustainability and strategic planning adviser in a city that farts out city planners.  Who sings that song, "silence is golden?"  He is also quite capable of violating the cities code of ethics ordinances.

I know it's nothing you haven't heard before, but I suggest replace mayor with pedophile and people might take your factless and inference filled comments with more seriousness.

...now where did I put those see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil monkeys.

I agree.  Perhaps we should be thinking about a regional UGB rather than a cities UGB.

    Mayor Adams,

If we can't don't have enough transportation money to encompass communities existing within the UGB, how do we have enough money to build a 4 billion dollar bridge?  You seem enjoy passing debt to our children through bonds on sports teams and tramways...How are they more important than filling potholes and connecting communities?

This is rediculous. Who is going to be buying these newly constructed homes(outside the current growth boundary) when no one can get a loan anyway? You'll just be creating blight for years to come.

    on The Benefits of Unemployment

I would love to see changes in the unemployment benifits program.

I like the swiss model for unemployment.  I think that the unemployed should be required to work for the state to receive their benifits.  Things like reporting to jury duty, roadway cleaning crews, safety patrols downtown or on public transportation, temp jobs in city and state offices, and other community work would be benificial to their communities. it would also give the unemployed something to do, an improvement in their skills set, and continued work experience.

    on Total Tax Makeover

How can your guest say that we shouldn't raise the tax burden on the rich in this "situation we're in," but wants to raise the tax burden on us with a sales tax?

    THIS DOES NOT COMPUTE.

    on Total Tax Makeover

The Majority of those who make over $200,000 make that money through capital gains.  Seriously 9% capital gains compared to 25% income tax. Why should their "income" be taxed at a rate more than half of what I am being taxed at?  Instead of a sales tax, Oregon should raise the capital gains tax.

"More than 80 percent of all capital gains income went to those making more than $200,000 a year in 2006. Very few making under $50,000 would be affected by any increase in the top capital gains rate. "(Factcheck.org)

It seems like a no brainer, that raising the capital gains tax would generate more money than a 5% sales tax.

    Scott,

Yes, I do have a problem comprehending people who write in incomplete sentences.

You commented that the military offering higher education incentives as part of its mission was absurdly ridiculous. I disagree.  I certainly don't see any irony the fact that  recruiters are allowed on campus but a play with adult themes isn't.  As a matter of fact,  that isn't even ironic.

"Irony revolve around the perceived notion of an incongruity between what is said and what is meant, or between an understanding or expectation of a reality and what actually happens. "(from the almighty wikipedia)

    An example of Irony:

Its ironic that you use the word irony without understanding its meaning.

    Scott,

I in no way represent the people infavor of censorship.  The play should be performed as is.  That being said, I am not arguing function. The obvious function of the military is to protecting our interests and assert our influence around the world.  My  only disagreement with you is your assertion that there are no "higher education opportunities" offered through the military. That idea is just wrong.

So now the military is about offering "higher education opportunities to many people." That is absurdly ridiculous.
