David Miller's comments:

on Teen Dating Abuse

Pat,

I feel like you may have gotten the wrong impression here. We're not going to only be talking about the "what" of abuse among teens; we'll also be talking about the "why." And if our guests -- one of whom is a father who is very vocal about parents in this equation -- don't specifically bring up the role of parents and other adults, I will.

on Hynix To Shut Down

Tom,

The Eugene Register-Guard has an answer to your first question:

"Since 1996, Hynix has paid $56.55 million in property taxes. It has been waived a further $66.86 million in property taxes under a series of enterprise zone exemptions."

Recently, Hynix has been paying around $2.5 to $2.7 million in property taxes -- or between 2.25 and 2.5% of the city's general fund budget -- a year.

on July Ideas

I thought this was interesting, because in a lot of ways "political correctness" seems like an old-fashioned phrase now -- more 90's than 00's. Can you give me a sense for how exactly it affects social or political dialogue these days? What are you less likely to talk about in public? What do you think others are? And where does this self-censorship come from?

My guess is that it's the Fully Informed Jury Association... which I'd never heard of until just now!

Katherine Hoppe, our guest from the Coos Bay/North Bend Visitors and Convention Bureau, mentioned that there's no train or bus service from Coos Bay. Our ever-alert reporter Chris Lehmann emailed to tell us that there is in fact bus service, which you can find here:

A blogger named "Cranky Flier" had this interesting post back in January about "essential air service," including a handy google map he put together showing where all of the subsidized airports (as of Nov. '07) were located. It's worth a look.

Tom, here's a searchable list of public notices in Oregon:

http://publicnoticeads.com/or/

But as you'll see, there's a note at the bottom:

"This database is not a substitute for the official publication that is required by law. You will still find those notices in your local newspaper."

Cole,

You're right in line with some of our guests. To hear them tell it, niche is it. One question that I'll ask them in the show -- and all of you now -- is where these niche interests came from. I can see how it's a powerful factor in marketing, and why it makes good business sense to exploit, but I'm genuinely curious about why we all seem more eager to focus our media diet ourselves... why general interest hold little interest.

Tom, thanks for this comment. Actually, I don't think it's a side note at all. It brings up an interesting question of where, more generally, a "public" notice belongs... and if the internet satisfies a community's need for some kind of announcement in some kind of public square.

JohnDc, we'll definitely run this by Karnazes! But to clarify, we've invited him on not to tell us what the Oregon running scene is like but to help situate the scene in the larger running world.

on Listening In

"My preference would be for cameras to be placed everywhere as it is a huge crime deterrent and also aids significantly in prosecuting crime that does occur within a camera's view."

Using this reasoning, would you also be in favor of the government recording -- officially, legally, openly -- every phone conversation as well? Do you think that would be both a crime deterrent and an aid in prosecuting crime?
