on Necessary Roughness?

Take a second and think about these two words as a singular descriptor:  “Political Correctness”.
“Political” a universal word that describes the base for all that is ‘incorrect’ in society regardless of you particular political stripe, and "Correctness"; used together to describe a behavior or attitude.
It should be clear that the only possible way to have "Political Correctness" is to eliminate the politics!

Yes, I fully understand that the goal was to prevent people from being offended.  Unfortunately the first casualty is truth.  The truth is you do not have the right to not be offended.  When you think about the term it really is Orwellian.

“Don’t ask me what I think of you I might not give you the answers that you want me to!”

on Budget Cuts Are Coming

Well...

Primary schools tops the list in good or bad times and schools have been underfunded for a long time as a % of budget.

Transportation statewide not just the I5 Corridor.

Starting in the "A's" on this list: http://www.oregon.gov/a_to_z_listing.shtml
The state is spending about $850,000 on the 2009 to 2011 budget cycle on the “State Board of Architects Examiners.
Why is this board not self funding?  Architects generally are well paid why is the taxpayer subsidising this necessary(?) task rather then the various architects that are benefiting

That question should be asked of every governmental agency.

Why is it that when government is faced with a budget short fall it first turns to slashing the basic services it provides to the taxpayer?

You all can have your union.

Can I still work as an independant in you now less profitable unionised company?

What about my right to work?

on Shovel Ready?

All the reports on NPR (& elsewhere) project that this debit funded stimulus package will have little effect for 18 months.  Friends that is about 18 months too late for literally millions of people!  If this bailout, oh excuse me, stimulus package is as effective as the one that we just “had” to give the banks, it will not only be18 months to late it will be FAR too little and have no real impact on MOST people.

The single thing that must be done to jumpstarting the “consumer based” economy is to get the “Consumer” to spend money!  That is the one thing that must be done however the consumer can not spend what they do not have; that old plastic credit paradigm has failed!
I recognize it is simplistic however, drastic conditions require drastic methods.  If we ignore that this stimulus package is being funded on credit.  The exact same model that has failed the individual tax payers so completely.  Why do we not just give every person filing a legitimate tax return for 2008 the roughly $9000 that this package that has just been approved will total out at?
Consumers will spend the money.  The smart Consumers will pay off debit.  Some Consumers that can will save the money thus generating taxes.  Sounds far too simple but the effects would be darn near immediate!  Not 18 months too late
Yes, I am serious; no I do not expect this to taken seriously by the experts.

Question:
In many parts of the state for more then 11% of the work force the “system” has failed. At what number, percentage unemployed, will the “system” completely fail for everyone?

on Black and White and Googled All Over

Because of the negative environmental impact and the fact that the News is out of date by often days ( in the case of the Oregonian) it is time (long past) that the entire medium dies.

It is imposable to justify the daily news print media and drive a Prius.

Protect your hearing if you can,
We in the day did not did not understand.
Silence is my favorite sound.
Music is no longer around.
Maddening, frustrating, hurts to hear,
the music is no longer clear.
No, silence is the sound most dear.

No argument.

Cut, reallocate, become efficient first, "achieve" this in good times and bad. Then and only then raise taxes!

Please point to the part of my income that has increased that I can give it to the state; ether directly with a tax increase on say fuel, or indirectly as in the pass on, that taxes on business effectively accomplish...

I am forced to reduce my spending because I DO NOT HAVE IT TO SPEND and people think that raising taxes is GOOD for me?
I have no discretionary income. That is see if you can grasp this if it is not "necessary" I can not spend it!! No eating out, no movies, no new clothes, no new cars, no new TV, no home repairs, zippy!
The ONLY reason I'm getting by is that I have no consumer debit.
I do hope that I can hold on to my house...

So, You tell me is there nothing in the state budget that if examined line by line can not be reallocated to where it NEEDS to be spent?!!!

The politicos must cut their spending just as their constituents? have been forced to for well over a year now; and for once they need to cut the fluff rather then the punitive cuts that they have opted for consistently in the past.

Democrats raise taxes Republicans raise taxes.
Democrats wastefully spend tax revenue, Republicans wastefully spend tax revenue.
This current Governor has never met a Tax he would not pass.

If given all of the exposure to politics in the past 2 year long election cycle you still believe that there is a difference between Democrats and Republicans: you are a fool.

It has never in history been proven successful to ?tax your way out of a depression?. Yet that is what the current political body certainly the state?s leader wants to try yet again.
Who will we tax?
Business? As a business I will simply raise my prices so that you my customer will pay the additional costs. Of course you will quit buying and I will go out of business for a net loss in tax revenue.
Products, such as Gasoline or Tobacco? When my budget is tight I quit using such products; I need only Food, Water, and Shelter in the end so I quit using these products for a net loss of tax revenue.
Individuals? Oh wait, their earnings have been reduced and thus they are a source of revenue that is shrinking and thus yet again you have a shrinking tax base.

The politicos must cut their spending just as their constituents? have been forced to for well over a year now; and for once they need to cut the fluff rather then the punitive cuts that they have opted for consistently in the past.

GeeWhiz, only 3.7% of the state is wilderness!

In 2004, 53% of the state was owned, managed or under the jurisdictional control of the Federal Government. In the next couple of year?s there is a federal travel management plan that is going to effectively close ?nationally? vast areas of otherwise open access lands to non-pedestrian users.

It is obvious that there are GAG?s that will not be satisfied until ALL human intrusion is eliminated, those of you celebrating this wilderness bill? watch your backs!
YOU are next!

Hilarious the position that wilderness has a positive economic impact!
The statement could not be less true when compared to open access, though I expect no less then such a position from one of the Eco-cults.
Yes, there should be wilderness areas but do not try to justify it with falsehoods.
The OHV, et al and equestrian users have a far greater economic impact then any other user group.

I am curious as to when the EIS for this legislation will be completed and if the areas to be so designated actually meet the statutory designation of wilderness?

on Higher Ed: What the Money Buys

Good program overall.
However most people exit the education system at the end of High School and do not pursue degrees though they often take courses in various real world applicable skills and or education.
Today's higher education system virtually ignores these people; though the Community Collages trys to serve this majority of the population.
I am not advocating cutting back on the existing higher education system I am advocating increasing the emphasis on the "Higher Education" entities that actually serve the majority of the state population.

Ban Insurance; ALL insurance.
Then instill legal responsibility by forcing the "lawyer" that loses any case to pay for the total costs of all parties involved in their frivolous actions.

The cost of living as a whole not just Health care will quickly correct to sustainable levels.
