on Where Bikes and Cars Intersect

Hi fatmidwesternwhiteguy -

Where are you from in Minnesota? My mom grew up there and I remember Minneapolis does have those great double paths around the lakes - one for wheeled transport (non-motorized) and one for foot transport, I think.

I always thought that meant the planners there realized early on different kinds of transport are better separated. Political?

Enjoy your rides!

on Is Stumptown a Dumptown?

Hi Peters - thanks for this passionate post! In this show we were trying to focus on toxic sites like the Superfund and underground tanks, but clearly there are a lot of other issues to address and we'll be looking into them. If it's possible to prioritize, which do you feel most impacts you?

cheers,

Emily

on Once Upon A Time In Philomath

Hi Dave,

Very interesting thread; I also checked out the Philomath Chatter blog http://www.philomathchatter.blogspot.com/ as you suggested and have talked to some more people in the community since the show. I'm researching the ODOT plans that led to the couplet in Philomath; I'm wondering how the coast to valley highway plans you described to me have affected other communities. Do you know?

Looking forward to meeting you in person!

Thanks, Emily

on Is Stumptown a Dumptown?

Hi UST Victim -

This sounds like a grueling ordeal. Where do you live? Were local authorities helpful at all?

I'm also curious how it came to light. Who initially told you about the contamination?

Thanks for posting.

on The Upside of a Downturn?

I vote for Why I'm Not Quite A Vegetarian and Gadgets v. Heirlooms for future shows!

The government lying about brown, though crucial, and underreported, might be too visual for the radio.

Also, it and all the TOL programs, are available for download from our site. The audio should be up in a couple hours.

Hi GREEKS, I used the language that Meredith Wood Smith had used, deliberately because of exactly the not-so-subtle points you raise. You're right, it is a label and in retrospect I should have used it but with context.

Thanks.

on Obama and Race in Oregon

Hi dmbrown, you're right, that was not an accurate quote and I wasn't reading from the speech. I meant to say that the way different groups show their anger can be segregated.

It's an important difference, and thanks for catching it.

on Recognizing Mental Illness

Catweeder -

Thanks for posting. I would love to hear more about the transition you made out of the mental health system. How did you do it - logistically, emotionally, financially? What kind of help did you need? Where did you find it? What's your situation now?

You're of course absolutely right and I'm embarrassed I didn't catch that in my own read. Correcting now!

on First Personal Problems

Yes - well, you can imagine that wasn't our first thought when she cancelled at 3:30 Friday afternoon! But yes again, we were quite relieved in retrospect - and re-thinking any clues that might have tipped us off.

Only one - and not a very strong one. Tom Cole of Kids Unlimited - who was a guest on the show - said prior to the program her story sounded really unusual, because most people in the situation she described in the book wouldn't have gotten the break of getting into college she claimed.

I feel it's particularly sad if she really was trying to get attention to the complex experience of living with gangs. She says a lot of the detail was based on real situations she witnessed or heard about while doing anti-gang work in LA.

Now it's just a guessing game which details in the quite compelling read might be true.

Thank you, I have been corrected! Many times! I blame my childhood. Apparently it was ingrained in my brain incorrectly back when I was a kid and he was in the Oregon legislature. I am working on it, because of course I'm completely embarrassed.

A side point, I'm having some trouble with certain words beginning with S. After living in Germany some Sch synapse is triggered even when no c or h is anywhere in sight. So don't hold your breath for a Willamettee. But watch out for Schalem!

on Coming Back From War

I agree, Gene. Context, big picture, it's vital, for sure. And - I like the word you chose - satisfying. All around. I was drawn in to Bill's experience, and it was not an easy interview for me because it took me back to some of my own stresses of Iraq - much more minor than his or Mandy's, but real. Anyway, backing off for context and - if I may - brighter illumination would have been good. It's what we're shooting for. Thanks for the reminder.
