on Closing & Consolidating Schools

Farmer Mike asks, "What happened?"
Less than 1% of the population hogs most of the wealth. That's what happened.
It is a trend that will only get worse unless we do something about it.
Sure, there will always be rich people, and in fact we need rich people. We need to encourage the rewards of initiative. But anything can go way, way, way too far.

on Obama's Popularity

I worked hard to become an Obama delegate in Klickitat County. However, at the time I was telling the other delegates the best we could expect from the guy is Empire Lite, something similar to the reform emperors in the declining years of the Roman Empire. Well, that's what we're getting. Until we Americans are willing to give up our empire, yeah right, that will only happen when it is torn from us by the forces of history, I think, then Empire Lite is the best we're going to get.

If I could, I would vote no plus tar and feathers.

on Chamber Music Northwest at Forty

Two comments.

First, I am 61. For several years I have been going once each year to a CMNW concert at Reed College with my neighbor, who is 99 this year. Well, she was a bit under the weather this year, so I went with her son and granddaughter, and a couple of friends. We do intend to attend next year, when she will be 100. Picnic dinner on the lawn there and then a fine concert. Great venue and music series.

Second, all in all, I would say one of, if not the, best and most artistically significant chamber music group of the past century or so would be the Grateful Dead. Maybe the next time you address this topic you could get Phil Lesh, a classically trained musician, to hold forth. That would be a heck of a show.

on Million Dollar Ideas?

Among the many possible excellent uses of $1 million from the Meyer Memorial Trust, it is hard to imagine a better use than encouraging the local growing and consumption of food.

Thank You, Jerrold Richards
