on Rurban Living

Larry and Damascus are on the cutting edge of the rebirth of the 'culture' of agrarian living.  The UGB has been a zoning wall between suburbs and agribusiness. Now Agricultural Urbanism, as it's called by some progressive town planners,  can weave food growth back into the edges of our urban culture.  Like interlocking fingers of urban and rural.

No need to further expand the UGB if we use Transfer of Development Rights, and build compact functional villages, plus infill and repair the miles of suburban corridors and town centers inside the UGB.

Go Larry...Go Damascus!

on Oregon's Historic Places

Could you read out on the air a more representative list of the buildings currently on the Historic Preservation list within portland?  You have mentioned Paul Bunyon, but a broader list of examples would be illuminating.  Are places like the Neo-classical US Bank on SW 5th and Stark, the buildings of AE Doyle, many of the old red brick schools, the Kennedy School, or Bagdad Theater to name a few that come to mind?

on Within Bounds

A little bit of all approaches should be taken to accommodate the growth of the metro area in coming decades.  A little bit of UGB expansion is in order, but when we build out we must build real towns will significant density and civic focus.  When we infill within the UGB we must also rebuild in the Greyfields (suburban parking lots) and Brownfields (industrial clean-up sites).  Portland is a seriously underbuild region when compared to the greatest cities of the world.  We can become a much more urban, concentrated, mixed, diverse and rich region of cities and towns.
