Kind of a seperate issue, but thought of it when Dr. Hawthorne and his namesake bridge came up. As a member of Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery, I am familiar with his place among Oregon historical greats. A lot of people don't know how much he did for his patients.

He frequently paid for cremation and burial of deceased patients out of pocket. They were often buried in the section now known as block 14. Much has been made of the Chinese that were buried there and supposedly moved, but almost no mention of patients are made. We are hoping to bring this issue further to the forefront, and raise money to add something to the block 14 monument to represent Asylum patients.
