on Local Library

Our small town library has become a daycare center. Parents have learned that they can send their children to the library all day for free where they will be supervised and entertained. The librarians are constantly chasing these children and trying to get them to behave and be quite. Even though I believe libraries are a valuable resource I can understand a small town's unwillingness to fund such services.

wphurley - Um..no. My point was that most countries require you to prove that you are in the country legally. The fact that the US wants to start a similar process shouldn't be such a big problem.

Anyh other words or ideas you want to stick in my mouth?

Gee, I was born here in America and I carry around my government issued ID everyday. It hasn't proven to be a burden of any kind. I am not sure why you would think this is some great imposition.

Yes he can "gain" citizenship. There is a process for this to happen. It takes time and effort though. However I have no issue with naturalizing children that were ilegally brought into this country by their parents, obviously the children had no choice.

When I was in China last year I had to register at the local police station in every town we stayed in. If you fail to register they throw you out of the country.

I personally know a young illeagal male who recieves Oregon Trail and Oregon Health Plan. When I asked him why he gets these he told me "they just give it to you if your illegal". I work in healthcare and I can tell you from experience that illegal's go stright from the welfare office to the ER with their brand new OHP paperwork. You are flat out wrong that they cannot get welfare.

My wife and I have decided to move to Mexico. Since you are so worried about the rights of illegals would you please ask president Calderon and fix a few things for us.
1. We don't want to show any documentation when we arrive.
2. Please make sure the Mexican police learn English before we get there. We want to be able to sue the police for asking for our papers.
3. We would like all government posted signs to be in English as well as Spanish.
4. Our children only speak English and we want them to be taught by English speaking teachers at their new public school in Mexico.
5. We want free quality health care without being arrested if we don't pay,(with English speaking doctors) free school, free lunch food stamps,
6. We don't want to pay taxes in Mexico.
7. We want English speaking politicians to fight for our rights, and want to protest the government without getting our heads bashed in by the police.
We think this is only fair since it is the same thing you do for Mexican illegal immigrants here.

Interesting that this discussion only includes one small buisness owner and everyone else cashes their paycheck from the State of Oregon.

Why isn't the state talking about cuts to the agriculture grant system? Oh, because that doesn't scare the taxpayers into agreeing to increases. The state could lift the property tax exemption for food packing facilities.

The point here is all we ever hear about is cuts to services for the disadvanataged or vulnerable populations. We never hear about all of the other programs the state funds that aren't as heart tugging. There is plenty of excess in the state budget that could be pared down and allow these human service programs to continue to serve the deserving.

Well, how much of the money that goes to Oregon Hunger Task Force pays for overhead? Are you taking a salary cut? Perhaps if OHTF didn't give aid to every undocumented person residing in Oregon, regardless of need, there would be more funds available for those that actually need it.

What is your definition of hunger? I can't find on your web site exactly what you consider "hunger" or "food insecurity". If the criteria is "involuntarily missed a meal in that last 30 days" that could cover 90% of the state.

What happens to your job if we do get everyone off of assistance? Don’t you have a vested interest in continuing to make people dependent upon your services? A social welfare program that is successful and actually gets people off public assistance would go out of business. Social workers must keep people in their case loads or they won’t have jobs.

Cuts to social welfare programs are not only appropriate but necessary.  You don’t improve someone’s budgeting skills by giving them more money to waste. So, when can we expect to see the press release announcing the voluntary reduction in wages for you and your staff?

on Getting Back to Work: Jobs and Identity

If money was no object I would love to quit being a nurse and do something more satisfying. If any OPB listeners are considering a carrer in nursing please think very carefully about your choice. It is difficult work, long hours, physicaly demanding, mediocre pay and amazingly poor representation. You can expect to be exposed to personal violence, discrimination, belittling comments, abusive personalities and infectious diseases. Those few moments when something truely wonderful happens in nursing are quickly overshadowed by the other 99.999% of the job.

Nurses are the first to be blamed for every patient death, infection, complication, and comlaint. Your employer will sacrifice you, the nurse, before they sanction a doctor or tell a family member they are being unreasonable.

Oh and if you don't speak Spanish you had better learn before entering nursing. If your patient doesn't speak English and can't tell you their medical history you are still responsible if something goes wrong and you and your family can be held personally responsible.

on Farmers Market Economy

I love it when these "organic" people start bashing "industrial agribusiness". Because of the success of the large corporate farm this country can feed more people for less money, on less land and with less waste than ever before in the history of mankind. I full support the individual’s right to seek out food grown locally or organically or whatever but don’t forget that it is only because of the availability of cheap, safe, abundant food that you have the ability to seek out these alternatives. If we went back to everyone growing their own food the lifestyle that so many of you take for granted would disappear.

Interesting that they NEVER cut sports programs or coaching positions. Why are sports programs immune from these cuts?

on Failing Graduation Rates

We can fix the budget problem by simply halting all benefits to undocumented Oregon residents. I personally know people who are here illegally and they automatically qualify for health care and food stamps. If we stop giving these benefits out so freely maybe we can get a reign on state spending. The vast majority of our tax money is given out in entitlements to people who do not pay into the system. This can not last forever. Eventually there will not be enough people paying into the system to support the cost.

Instead what the goverment and unions will do is threaten to cut teachers, police, firefighters, nurses etc. to scare us into voting for tax increases.

on Failing Graduation Rates

More money is not the answer! The education system is already wasting millions of dollars every year on administration, union entitlements, outrageous contract buyouts (U of O) and ineffective teachers that have tenure. Unfortunately we will never be able to change this system with out the teacher's union spreading fear and lies about "harming our children". First thing to change is to fire all of the administrators and dissolve the teacher's union.

on Failing Graduation Rates

From what I can tell after having three children in the Oregon school system the primary focus of high schools is their sports programs not their academics. What we really need to know is if the state education system produced enough professional sports players. If we spent more money on sports and less on math, reading, science and other unnecessary programs we might not have high graduation rates but we could produce one or two sports stars that could go on to the state college system and bring the glory and respect that is so prized from our education systems. After all how many people tuned in to watch an engineering student or pre-med student win a prize for academics? Really what we want is to turn students into revenue generators on the playing field. So let’s stop worrying about graduation rates and start focusing on what’s really important.

Umm.....I don't think gand members spend alot of time at the range perfecting their technique. If the shooters are missing most of their shots than they should be at the range learning how to use the gun properly.

An Xacto knife can be just as deadly a weapon as gun. If a white, middle class, well dressed articulate male with a gun is meanacing a cop I expect the cop to shoot him. I agree that it is sad that distrubed indivdual was killed but the cop did exactly what he should have done, he did what he was trained to do and he did what we hired him to do when it was decided we needed police officers.
