I remember cassette tapes, and still have not one, but two working cassette players on which I could play them. (I also remember 8-track tapes, and these big, flat things we used to call "El-Pees." I actually inherited my grandmother's old 1957-era stereo that still works and can still play them, as well as having a built-in AM/FM receiver.

I agree...there is no good reason that textbooks need to be updated and re-published every other year -- especially for subjects like Algebra or other levels of mathematics. (The principles tend NOT to change for a long time.)
I would propose that publishers can't publish a "base" edition, current as of the date it goes to press, say every ten years, then offer bi-annual supplements for a modest fee.
And for textbooks that are published electronically, maybe to a SD card, or similar format that is compatible with the Nook or Kindle, can be updatable on-line for a certain length of time.

I think that eBook readers should have a place in our modern education system, even if only as a means of allowing students (especially college students) a means of bringing all their textbooks to class on a daily basis without having to carry an extra 30 pounds in addition to her (or his) notepad and pen/pencil.
(I've been to college recently -- I KNOW how much those books can add up to. I had a book for business law that was 6# all by its lonesome, and other book sthe same term that were darn close!)

Soggy, you've been misled if you think that three-day weekends are set up that way for the masses. The truth is they were done that way for the convenience of the Congress and the Unions that represent Federal Employees (read: Postal Workers) so that THEY can have a more convenient schedule.

You might need only to refresh the browser window, Tom.
On a tangentially related note, my partner and I turned on our radio to listen to Weekend Edition Sunday, and were treated to what sounded like the audio program from Sesame Street. Not that we were offended, just not expecting it. (Elmo isn't on WESun that often.)

We have decided as a nation that we see fit to have a legal holiday to remember the birthday of Dr. King, but we scarcely does the holiday ever fall on Dr. King's actual birthday, January 15. This year, once again, it is being observed two days late. (We do this to some of our most revered presidents, too...see: President's Day.)

I gotta tell ya, I would be VERY SKEPTICAL of any so-called promises made by Osama bin Laden.

While Oregon may ahead of the rest of the country in legalizing inter-racial marriage, anti-miscegenation laws were still on the books in many other states, until a SCOTUS decision in Loving v. Virginia in 1967 (if I recall the year correctly) overturned them.
Also, did anyone know that ARIZONA refused to recognize Martin Luther King Day until the NFL threatened to boycott the state with the Super Bowl?

My partner and I recycle ours each year. In Eugene, we have two options for recycling of phonebooks: either in our curbside recycling carts, or in the red dropboxes in many shopping centre parking lots, where the Eugene Mission picks them up along with old newspapers.

Thanks for the shout-out, Dave, as one of the participants who has an "announcer-friendly" user name! My choice was fairly simple, though, as it is derived from my own name.

Hey, Jacob...I gotta challenge you on the date of that Queen song... It was from their 1977 Album, "News of the World." I remembered that my brother had a copy when he was in grade school, in 1978, and that song was on it.
Pretty good on quoting the lyrics, though. Rock ON!

Something tells me that regardless of whether the Ducks win the Bowl Game or not, "Uncle Phil" will find some reason for further escalating the athletic "arms race" and pour more money into Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Nike to the detriment of the REAL reason for having a University: Educating our citizens.
Like it or not, The University of Nike has sold its soul to Phil Knight in exchange for all the buildings he has built and "gifted" to the University: the major renovation of Autzen Stadium, the Knight Library, The Knight Law School, The Jaqua Athletics Shrine, The Matthew Knight Arena, the luxurious locker facilities at the Moshofsky Centre, etc., etc., etc. With the sole exceptions of the Law School and the Main Library, everything that Knight puts his name to or his dollars behind is squarely aligned with the Intercollegiate Athletics Department.
.
HEY, PHIL! HOW ABOUT TOSSING A BUCK OR TWO TOWARD THE ACADEMIC SIDE OF THE UNIVERSITY? THOSE OF US WHO ARE NOT JOCKS OR OTHERWISE ATHLETICALLY INCLINED SURE WOULD APPRECIATE IT!!!

Who wants the cheapest unviersity president anyway? CEO's of billion dollar corps get paid a lot... this is the same. -- michaelO — Mon Jan. 3rd 9:59a.m.
I would like to see Universities handle the money I spend on tuition in a responsible manner. Just because the tuition is higher at one university doesn't automatically mean that university is better than any other in all fields. Johns Hopkins, for example, is widely regarded as being an excellent med school, but I don't know that it is the most expensive in terms of tuition rates.

And exactly WHAT RESEARCH does Richard Lariviere do, as President of the University of Nike?
It was my understanding that Professors were required to do research from time to time, not the Administrative Staff (like the President, the Provost -- and just what the heck does a Provost do, anyway?).

on The Meaning of Marriage
There is no reason (that I can think of) that a marriage can't be between two (or more) consenting adults. If three, four, five, or more consenting adults wish to form a marital community, then why should they not be allowed to? This is not the model I would choose for me and my partner, but why should this be outlawed at all?
Chances are, a polyamourous marital community would include more than one male and more than one female, thus looking, on the surface at least, like a same-sex union.

To me, marriage is a lifetime commitment. My Dad and Mom were married for over 43 years when Mom passed away, and my partner and I have been married for over 25 years, and together for over 27. (Yes, we are a same-sex couple.)
