on The Price of Not Flying

Personally, I would choose to take the train or drive rather than flying because I object to the idea of state-sanctioned SEXUAL ASSAULT. I do not believe I should have to be subjected to some stranger with about as much training as the tin on his chest fondling my breasts or my private parts. The only person who gets to do that is my partner, or my doctor.

Seen on a bar's readerboard down here in Eugene:

Liquor in the front

Poker in the rear.

Means one thing written out, but sounds like it could mean something different when spoken.

But where do you get the salmon-flavoured vodka?

.

.

How about this for a name: Columbia River Salmon Run? It would address the inclusion of flavours that represent both Oregon and Washington.

Did you know....That Henry Weinhard's stayed in business during Prohibition (our long national error) by producing root beer and other soda pops?

Despite the dismal economy, Oregon’s alcohol industry has something to toast. From beer to wine to spirits, the state’s alcohol industry is enjoying very strong growth. -- from the introduction of this topic

Does anybody besides me think that it is attributable to people trying to drown their frustration and sorrows over the dismal economy and the abysmal recovery we are supposedly having. I recently heard on the news that the "recession is over." Really? Then tell me:

Where are the JOBS, Mr. Boehner?

on Unemployed for Ages

I've been unemployed for 137 weeks (as of this Wednesday), and I am confident that I have been subjected to Age Discrimination, and I'm 'only' 46.

I do not put dates on things like my HS Graduation, but putting time frames on employments is a necessary evil, to show experience. (And plenty of employers can add those up!)

Yeah, and when you submit your application (or resume) on-line, the only response you can hope for is an automated acknowlegement that your resume or application was received. I have gotten this numerous times.

THis joker who says "if you work hard anything is possible" is WAY OFF THE MARK! I have worked hard from the time I was in 10th grade (Fall 1979) until May of 2008, and what has it gotten me? NOTHING! WHAT A CROCK!

Tom, let me add my thanks for your service to Our Great Nation, regardless of how wrong-headed the leaders who got us into that war may have been. Too many of America's Fighting Men and Women were given the cold shoulder or spat upon when they returned home from doing what they were sent by our government to do.

Serving one's nation does not always mean putting on a uniform and picking up an M16, sometimes serving one's country means having the courage to stand up for one's beliefs. It takes great courage to stand up to one's enemies, and greater courage to stand up to one's friends.

Finally, I applaud your courage to stand against something that was initially popular, until Americans woke up and smelled the burnt bamboo.

No worries, trurl, I was just trying to joke back, despite my dislike for the holiday/winter season.

(By the way...are you impressed that I remember that from a show that was on so long ago, even though it lives eternally in syndicated re-runs?)

"Guide me Landru,..." -- trurl9

Is this supposed to be a quote from Star Trek: TOS Episode "Return of the Archons?" Because other than Louisiana politicians Mitch and Mary Landrieu, that it the only Landru I know of.

@Tom: Yeah...just replace a couple of words with their "sailor" equivalents and you'll see what caused my original comment to attract the editor's blue pencil!

@trurl9: Ha ha ha...I know you're just trying to give me a bad time trurl and don't intend it in a mean way.

I don't know, jacob. I have grown to dislike winter over the last dozen or so years, but I don't really have any complaints or other problems related to the other seasons.

I think that my dislike of winter may be related to the fact that not one, not two, but three family members have died in January -- two of them within a week of one another in 1999, then my mother in January 2007. So the anniversaries of their passings all occur within a week and a half each year!

Now do you see why I have a strong dislike for winter, and don't really have much use for the holidays, either?

.

But then again, having been in counseling (necessary while transitioning) for over two years, one or the other of my counselors would probably have picked up on it.

Overheard in a bookstore (which shall remain un-named):

Customer: Where are the self-help books?

Bookseller, snarkily: If I told you, it would defeat the purpose.

Today we really want to know — how are you? Are you sad this season? Why? What are you doing to combat your blues?

How am I? I'm pissed! I'm pretty damn disgusted with the whole mess!

How about it, Politicians? How about helping the middle class become re-employed? Maybe then we can have HAPPY HOLIDAYS, too! How about helping more than just the wealthy to have a Happy Holiday?!? How about doing something about the U-6 Unemployed, you know, the number that includes those of us who are not drawing unemployment, who are under-employed or unemployed and growing more discouraged by the hour? How about it, Salem? How about it Washington, DC?

I'm tempted to just say "SCREW CHRISTMAS AND ALL THE HORSE HOCKEY THAT GOES WITH IT!" But I'm sure some Pollyanna will try to convince me to cheer up. Pretty damn hard to cheer up when one has been unemployed and looking without any luck for 32 months. Pretty damn hard to be cheerful when the whole holiday season reminds one of the death of a loved one! (Especially one's mother.)

You know what?

SCREW CHRISTMAS AND ALL THE HORSE HOCKEY THAT GOES WITH IT!

Sorry, frankj, your comments carry no credibility since you don't seem to be able to spell even the simplest of names, such as

"Nancy Pelosi."

Do everybody a favour and learn to spell so that your remarks do not look like random keystrokes.

I am disgusted with the whole mess! There is not a single person who came from modest means sitting on Capitol Hill, representing the concerns of the middle class. I am sick of Career Politicians (Do you HEAR me, JOHN McCAIN?) sitting there saying that they will do things like vote for the repeal of DADT when the Joint Chiefs tell him it is a good idea to repeal, but then REPEATEDLY MOVES THE DAMN GOAL POSTS!

I would really appreciate it if anyone who is serving in Congress or The Senate or our State legislature who really does give a damn would call me and tell me how he or she is actually trying to help the middle class and the uncounted unemployed (not just the ones who are still drawing unemployment)!
