Steve:

Read yesterday's Oregonian for a taste.  As for the "poorly run," spend a little time at the museum.  It is a disaster.

Marc:

Being audited by a CPA firm simply tells us that no one is engaged in fraud.  It does not indicate that the Society is being properly managed.  That's my issue.

on Multnomah County Elections

I am surprised at the number of insiders posting in support of the Oregon Historical Society.  As a businessman, I am a supporter and user of OHS.  I contribute - out of my own pocket - at the $250/year level to the museum.  That said, I hardly ever set foot inside - the exhibits are poorly put together, the museum is user-unfriendly, and the staff is poorly informed.

Mr. Vogt has mismanaged the institution since his arrival.  He is paid more than the governor ($165,000 per year).  He has failed to make required cuts, negotiated poorly, and let's face it - missed the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial completely.

Let's look at the rhetoric - if we shutter OHS, this stuff isn't just going to end up on eBay - it is going to go to one of the state universities (which is where much of it belongs).  Further, OHS is still (a) making some money and (b) getting money from the state.

Picking the pockets of Multnomah County residents is not the way to go.  If this measure does pass, OHS can kiss my $250 a year goodbye.  How many other wealthy Multnomah County residents will feel the same way.

on The State of Black Oregon

I am wondering what the shift to a "green economy" will do to Black Oregonians.  As an environmental professional, I have never seen a more white (OK, there are plenty of women) group of people in my life.  We have a white DEQ director, PDX Office of Sustainability, Bureau of Environmental Services, PDC Sustainablity Coordinator, METRO Sustainability Office, in addition to all the white faces in the Dept of Agriculture, Natural Resources, etc.

Sorry - this isn't a reply, but the app is being quirky today.  I am wondering what the shift to a "green economy" will do to Black Oregonians.  As an environmental professional, I have never seen a more white (OK, there are plenty of women) group of people in my life.  We have a white DEQ director, PDX Office of Sustainability, Bureau of Environmental Services, PDC Sustainablity Coordinator, METRO Sustainability Office, in addition to all the white faces in the Dept of Agriculture, Natural Resources, etc.

on Tuition Equity?

Adela - Clearly, this is a bill that was written by someone who doesn't understand US immigration law.  There's no way to "work towards citizenship" (at least today).

on Tuition Equity?

I appreciate the student interest and advocacy - but they should read the bill.  This is not about the kid that was born in Oregon, whose parents are undocumented.  This is about the kid who was born somewhere else and goes to HS in Oregon.  These sorts of programs could create "University Tourism" where people on tourist visas come to visit family in Oregon and stay with that family through high school.  They could get discounted tuition (don't think it could happen?  Travel outside the US sometime) and would then return home with a US degree.

Also - don't be confused by this issue of being a "productive member of Oregon society."  If you can't work in the US because your an illegal - what difference does it make if you're an illegal with an Oregon University degree?

HB 2939 is ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS - NOT THOSE BORN IN OREGON:

"an institution of higher education listed in ORS 352.002 shall consider a student who is not a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States to be a resident of this state if the student:"

aplambeck - not so - if you are BORN in Oregon, you are a US citizen.  If you then live in Oregon - you can get in-state tuition. HB2939 allows illegal - undocumented aliens (born in other countries), who attend Oregon HS for a period of time - to attend Oregon universities at in-state tuition rates.

on To Burn or Not to Burn?

Let's get this right - asthma is a disease (unlike the Oregonian, which editorialized about the death of a "perfectly healthly" asthmatic).  People with diseases should not live in areas that exacerbate their diseases.  Smoke is smoke.  There is far less biogenic smoke in Oregon than there was 100 years ago.  100 years ago, they had a word for asthmatics - dead.

on Unemployment: Regional Ripples

Your OHSU guest obfuscates the point, there is no demand drop at OHSU, unlike Microsoft and Intel

The demand side for OHSU has not dropped off that much, the bloated staff and salaries came directly from our health insurance policies.

For some reason I can't submit more than a few words.

If OHSU can layoff this many people (5 in their "media" group alone) there has clearly been too much "fat" in their operations.
