It is time to rethink the most basic goal of our economy. GDP is not a useful measure of progress. The goal of growing the economy or continually increasing GDP has become harmful as we bump up against the carrying capacity of our ecological systems. It is time to change the goal from unsustainable growth to a sustainable economy. There is an alternative -- the steady state economy.
