Sarah Jane Rothenfluch's comments:

on Teen Dating Abuse

tpohara,
I appreciate your comment, but I actually do feel this show has quite a specific focus: relationship violence -- both physical and emotional -- between youth and teens. It is not meant to also encompass adult/teen relationships. I hope you'll have a chance to listen to the show, or watch as the posting happens here, to see if what I think is a focus show actually is.
Thanks,
Sarah

on Mind Your Manners

We certainly welcome all show ideas. I'm just sorry you weren't sure how to submit your suggestion! We do have a "brainstorming" area on this site. In the future that would be the best place for a new idea. (Check it out here:
http://action.publicbroadcasting.net/opb/posts/list/712210.page) In the meantime, we'll certainly give your idea some thought. Unemployment numbers just came out this week, making us think we should do a show about that -- this is just more fuel for that fire! Thank you.

Rachel, thanks for the suggestion. It does bring two things to mind for me. First, while the anniversary is certainly important we usually try to find other pegs (other than just anniversaries or "days") to link shows to. We also like to make shows resonate in the Pacific Northwest as much as possible. If you have any more ideas about how to do this show -- taking those two points to mind -- I would really love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for the idea... as we approach election season I wanted to make sure you know that we are in regular contact with the Portland City Club and we actually have a couple of copies of this report here. As we plan our coverage of the initiative system we will certainly keep this in mind. Thanks so much.

It is true that this was not mentioned in the post. It will be a big part of the on-air conversation, however. And I appreciate you bringing these points online.

Thank you for the suggestion, Tom. I really appreciate it and will see if I can find Mr. Livingston if not for tomorrow's show then for the future. We are certainly always looking for good raconteurs (and online raconteurs too!)

on Election Season Starts Soon

Thanks for the great question. My post was very open-ended to really give people a place to offer any and all ideas. We truly are in the brainstorming stage (a very exciting stage) of planning for election coverage so I do want to hear all the ideas out there. We will be doing a series of programming beginning at the end of August and extending until November 4th. So I welcome show ideas and topic suggestions. I'm eager to hear how much coverage people want to hear and what people just don't want to tune into. If people have the inclination to "drill down" like you did it is certainly welcome. Any way of getting into the minds of our listeners is greatly appreciated!

Andykari, I've heard that truck drivers schedule their trips along the I-5 to avoid hitting the Columbia River during rush hour. Is this true?

Melodeon, thank you for sharing your experience. I'm curious -- why did you decide to live without a home? I'd love to hear more of your story.. Thanks, Sarah.

on Primary Conversations: U.S. Senate

The question of whether an individual represents a company when making a donation is an interesting one, and difficult to answer. I can tell you that the law, according to the Federal Election Commission, is that while individuals and political actions committees (PACs) can make political contributions, corporations and labor unions cannot. You can read more about the rules, and search for campaign donations, here: http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/citizens.shtml

You can also check out Open Secrets, the website of the Center for Responsive Politics. But note that while Open Secrets lists top donors for each candidate, it does so with this explanation: "The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organization's PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families."

http://www.opensecrets.org/races/contrib.asp?ID=ORS1&cycle=2008&special=N

What's your experience? Do you donate as an individual, or do you make contributions because you work for a company with a particular interest in a campaign?

Thanks. Those are good questions to consider. Your comment about teachers being poorly paid is something we took up very recently on Think Out Loud. If you didn't catch it live, you may want to listen here:

Thanks for the suggestion, but Jeff Merkley actually is not a superdelegate. Here's a list of who is:

Gov. Ted Kulongoski
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden
U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer
U.S. Rep. Darlene Hooley
U.S. Rep. David Wu
U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio
Secretary of State Bill Bradbury
Democratic Party officials Meredith Wood Smith, Frank Dixon, Wayne Kinney, Jenny Greenleaf and Gail Rasmussen

Thanks for your note. We definitely want to cover stories of importance to our Washington listeners as well. On March 26th we'll have Governor Chris Gregoire on the program for an hour. But in the meantime if you have any ideas of issues we should make sure to talk about, please do let us know. Thank you.

Tim, thank you so much for sharing your experience and opinion. I produced this show and have been agonizing over what term to use -- if "criminally mentally ill" or "criminally insane" is not correct, in your mind, what is?
