on Geocaching

This is why I enjoy talking to people at daVinci Days coming up in Corvallis on the 16-18th. We have a booth at the festival staffed with geocachers to help answer people's questions, teach them how to use their GPS devices, and teach them how to geocache. For the most part you're never more than a mile from a geocache, and if you're taking a drive you're always going to pass by a few wherever you're going.

My nephews love geocaching, the hunt, the hike, the find, and trading cars or small toys. Sharing, caring, and exercising them to wear them out all at the same time.

on Geocaching

Geocaching is a great way to help your family and friends get outside and be active. There are caches for everyone from short in town hides to long treks where the hike is the reason to go. We are going to be helping educate people at daVinci days in Corvallis on July 16-18th.

on Sex Ed

I think Karen is clueless about the realities of sex. Humans are animals, and the innate desire to reproduce is much stronger than the ability to abstain. There is plenty of evidence that abstinance only education doesn't work. This is another example of the squeaky wheel getting the grease. Parents who fully endorse sex ed should be able to stand up, but we're such a repressed society that there is fear that they'll be ostracised and looked at as perverted.

Children from a young age, even in the womb, have shown evidence of touching themselves and knowing that it feels good. Sex and sexuality is never spoken of, and it's left out of the childhood education books, but what do you do when your 5 year old daughter finds that it's fun to masterbate? There are many parents out there who think their young children are not normal, however this is the norm, and should be discussed not repressed. The US is so sexually repressed that even showing a breast on TV creates outrage, along with nursing children in public.

What we need is a whole health sexual education program, and it needs to start with parents understanding that we are animals, and animals desire to reproduce is STRONG. EDUCATION is important, not just to say "don't have sex" but educating students about condom usage, protection, STI's, and pregnancy. The best way to prevent teen pregnancy is to show them what happens before, during and after birth. Teaching to not have sex isn't enough, and is a huge mistake.

on Referendum Signatures

As was said on the program, without making the signatures public, the people signing the petitions have no strong interest in finding out, looking into, or educating themselves about the other side of a petition. ONLY when people are pushed and lists are published are those who sign blindly truly forced to educate themselves about what they're signing.

Opening the lists to public scrutiny is a good thing, will promote discussion, but to expect that there really will be a huge threat to the signers is taking it too far. Educate voters about what they're signing, and conversations will take place, and we will be a better society.

on Referendum Signatures

There have been so many problems in the recent past with the signature gathering process and so often people sign multiple pages without thinking about what they're signing.

Releasing the names of signature gatherers will make people read and become educated about what they're signing, rather than blindly signing. Educating the public is never wrong.
