I laughed out loud when I realized it was Cynthia Rylant reading! We loved her books, and I could recite them from memory after so many readings.

I'd like to know how I can help. It doesn't matter if it's one child or 1,000 - the need is still there. We should not deny the situation just because it is out of our comfort zone. There must be something we can do to offer our support.

on No More Asperger's?
It's a real shame that so much emphasis is placed on language delay, because frankly when you're 25 years old it makes no difference at all whether you started speaking at the age of 2 or 5. Personally I think HFA and Asperger's are very likely the same thing or nearly the same thing. I just don't think "Autism" is the most appropriate label for it.

The conversation about word selction reminds me of Charlotte's Web. She, too, had the important job of selecting just the right word for her community.
Thank You Nikki for your work!

on Battling Over Birth?
Most midwives would have identified this situation early and insured the right steps to inform an ob/gyn way ahead of time. Second, Karen Adams experience was one incident. 11,000 babies are born every day. Third, the transfer rate of clients to hospitals for most midwives is very low. As pointed out earlier there are hundreds of successful home births.

I am not referring to some arcane traditional poetic rhythm either. What you have left: are the concepts, which seemed flash, pop, and cosmetic. You can be modern, edgy, austere, asymmetrical, comfortable or cacophonous and still do so in an oddly beautiful fashion. Their poetry just doesn't do it for me.

Film is ART, art is fluid, there is no ONE way of making movies. Those who come here from out of State may do well to recognize that perhaps they can also learn something from us.

Micheal Fine, who runs the Portland film commision was completly accessable and helpful. He treated me as if I were mounting a large production here even though I have ZERO budget. His counterpat in LA wouldn't even return a phone call.

This kind of disavowal is exactly the reason that the modern-day slave trade thrives here. There are more slaves in the world today than there have been at any other time in history. Your attitude only exacerbates the problem.

I can understand the frustration professionals from bigger cities might experience as they adjust, but it's not helpful to behave like a victim. Be the change you want to see.
