on Tea Party

It's amazing to me that any group would select Sarah Palin as their poster child.  That's a solid indicator of the intellectual level of the Tea Party.  Aside from that, it's pretty obvious that the Tea Party is composed of the most conservative of the conservatives, and their agenda reflects that.  I tend to agree with President Obama that the Tea Party is made up of all of those conservatives that insisted that he didn't have a valid birth certificate.

on As We Are: Addicted

I've been sober from alcohol and drugs since 1986.  I have a brother that is a practicing compulsive gambler.  In my opinion any discussion about recovery MUST include the absolute effort on the recovering person's part to discover what got them drunk or loaded, or gambling in the first place.  There was some condition in my life that made it acceptable for me to be face down in the gutter in my own vomit.  Until those issues are ironed out the addict won't find any peace of mind even in sobriety.  That is what a dry drunk is, someone that has stopped drinking but is still compelled by all of the insanity that got them drunk in the first place.  The big book of alcoholics anonymous addresses this issue in almost perfect detail by instructing newly sober alcoholics in the twelve steps.  The therapudic remedy to the insanity that baffles us addicts to the point of self destruction.  It doesn't really matter, in my opinion, if a person uses church, AA, some recovery clinic, or other type of approach to getting sober, the important thing is that the therapudic side of the recovery is addressed in a comprehensive way.  I think this is true regardless of what the addiction is, the addiction is simply a symptom of a bigger, more complex physchological issue.

on Consumerism Confidence?

My wife and I are already frugal. Not out of necessity, but choice. We've made the choice to be very selective about our purchases for a long time. This is what has enabled us to enjoy the money we do spend. I think it's wise for people to save, spend wisely and sparingly, and to always have enough money in savings to cover most minor catastrophes. The current economic crisis is a disaster. I would love to see an accounting of the $700 billion that has already been allocated to alleviate the crisis. I'd bet if someone looked they would discover a lot more money gone than has been actually spent to help the crisis. And now we're going to throw another bunch of billions of dollars at it???? Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Why don't we wait and see if the first $700 billion are going to do any good before we throw more money down that drain?

on How Does Your Garden Grow?

This may be a duplicate post, but since the first one doesn't seem to be showing up. We have maintained a spring to fall veggie garden for the last four years and the attached photo shows just a sampling of what we grow. We also have flower beds around the property that we try to keep as varied as possible. Just about everything we grow are spring to fall bloomers. We are finding that we have to water more as each year goes by than the previous year. I do have a question, when is the best time to plant potatoes? My wife and I have this discussion every year and it would be nice to hear some advice on this. Thanks!
