About the 72 hour kit~ use the list as a spring board, but think 4 weeks rather than 4 days.

I appreciate Ms. Lin's Viet Nam Memorial as a 'public place for private memorials'. I am reminded of memorials at small town cross roads with a flag and a bronze plaque mounted on a brick or stone face. Names of Locals who gave their all for us. People known or un-known, remembered every year, with a silent Thanks. I have never seen, in person, Ms Lin's Memorial. We have one here, in the Village. I see it every day. Thanks.

Water! Your hot water heater is drinkable water! Be sure it's bolted/ strapped down and clean of (inside the tank) settlement.
Don't use old milk jugs, not sanitary. And if you use bought jugs, rotate your stock 2 times a year~ you can water your plants w the old. I suggest you refresh your 10+ day stash of supplies when you change your clocks every spring and fall.
And think about storage OUTSIDE the house~ What if the house falls over, it's pretty heavy to move. Try your back yard shed or a galvanized can on the side of the house that is protected from the landslide.
Don't forget the pets! They are your pets, they don't do so well on their own, like a wild animal. Besides who wants a pack of dogs in the neighborhood when you are living in a tent for 3 weeks in the cold winter rain.
Put a pair of shoes & socks under your bed, protected from glass, in case it happens at night.
I have no suggestions for if it happens when you are in the shower. Sorry ;)
Thanks for the show

Better education for buyers People who are buying a big ticket item: a house or car, who have not bought within maybe 5 years, should be required to take an independent class on loans (independent from the lender). If we can't/ don't/ won't legislate against predatory lending or if lenders keep finding ways around the laws, then we must educate the buyer. Buyer Beware, not Lender be legitimate.
As long as lobbyists are so strong and Greenspan didn't see the train wreck coming, then "the people" must learn to walk on their own two feet.
This critical thinking education could also be applied in every day life, finding a spouse, rearing children and reading voter's pamplets.

I had let go of all the keepsakes, of generations, I had. It was not easy, not fun. But I scanned all the photos, papers, etc. Now I can still see the photos of my Great Grand folks from the hard drive, so I still have some touchstones. I came to know that as a token of her love for me my Grandma gave me things I no longer have, but she also gave me 'her chin' and I when I look in the mirror I remember how much my Grandma loved me. A touchstone I will ALWAYS have. Makes loosing the china a little easier! And that will make moving a little easier too ;) A little zen
But I wish I had a flat screen TV ;) not so zen

on As We Are: Child Free
I dont feel I'm too selfish to not have a child. Some times people have children because they are shelfish. Takes all kinds for a rounded society. Please avoid judgemts in your comments.
Thanks

on As We Are: Child Free
Pretty interesting. I never realized there was a lot of people who didnt have children (for what ever reason)
I didnt because I knew I was unprepared to parent. And un-motivated to be prepared. Later, I couldnt. I have sibs that had grand kids for my parents. The folks still pressed me to adopt until I said "If someone doesnt want children, they are someone who shouldnt have children And that's better for the chilld, not to have a mother who didnt want to be a mother."
People OUTSIDE your decision parameters have no right to subject you to their values. That's my biggest burr.
When someone asks Why didnt you? I answer "It's not your business, but I didnt because I know (not thought) it is (not was) the right thing for me." Stated in the present tense and the affirmative closes the conversation. If someone presses, "As I said, it's not your business."
I like kids and enjoy them, but am glad I havent any. I volunteer for Big Sisters but not with a child. I do office work, because I believe in the work Big Sisters does.
My husband of then 9 years divorced me so he could have kids. That's understandable. They have 2 and are very happy. So am I.

on A Conversation with Bill McKibben
Sequoia~
I painted my house in FLA white. It was cooler. Houses (& roofs) all over the warmer water regions (Greece, Israel, Bahamas) are light colors. When it's hot outside wearing light clothes is cooler than dark colored clothes. A white car is cooler than a dark car. The light color on top of the tar shingles WILL reflect heat BEFORE it gets to the tar paper under side. The attic needs a vent system and insulation.
Lighter color is cooler. Maybe not by much, but it is cooler and more reflective.
I suspect the contractor didnt understand the question/issue the way you meant it. At any rate, if you want a light colored roof or one made of jelly-beans, your contractor, after advising you as to his/her considered opinion, should do as you ask (as long as it's no code violation) or find another contractor. And as your contractor did not seem to object to light shingles, he should be able to install them, as you ask, with no issue.
Last~ Have you considered a living green/ eco roof?
