on What's Working (and not) in Education

College does seem to be going towards a rich-limited token poor student system. What can be done to equalize higher ed and even more apparent, K-12, opportunity? I see a economic system that rewards people most willing to do what it takes - not necessarily educated or uneducated. What are we preparing people for through school? Is that apparent? Not to me.

on Candidate Conversation: 5th District

I'd like Scott to talk about how he would of handled the wars and economy differently, as a congressman with a limited scope of power. Assuming he was in the same position and time frame as Kurt. Also, who started the Lorenz Bruun real estate company he owns? What's the story there?

on Candidate Conversation: Metro President

Both candidates have touted experience in creating jobs. I'd like to hear an explanation as to how Metro is a job creation engine. Beyond jobs at Metro run agencies such as the zoo and recycling depots. What specific types of jobs can Metro be apart of creating?

on Faith in the Recession

2012 - Jesus is coming to save us all. Wish I could hear more about this thought amongst religious people. Non-religious myself, more a spiritual realist.

on Suggest a Show

California is setting up to vote on legalizing marijuana soon. How does this effect Oregon? What about a topic on drug legalization in general? Parallels to the alcohol prohibition?

A group I find personally stimulating with lots of facts and a very unique point of view on this topic: L.E.A.P. (Law Enforcement Against Drug Prohibition) - they have guests available from the police community to speak on the show, I'd imagine.

on Police Matters

My biggest problem with the state of policing in the USA - the power a lone poor officer on the street wields to ruin a life is far to strong. For instance, a friend was arrested for criminal mischief as a juvenile, as an adult he is not able to pursue many opportunties to support his livelyhood because of this one instance.

Do we as a society want these individuals controlling such matters? Essentially that is what police do. The court of law takes an officers word as science 99 times out of 100.

There is no room in our society for any messing up. There are laws that make just about everything illegal (except work and sitting in your home) if you word it correctly. Young people are impulsive and make mistakes. Yet we are witnessing adults/officers all over the country making terrible, poor, implusive decisions without much any represcussions. People have a right to be angry.

Read 1984? Read much about police states? Giving unlimitied power to police will lead us down a nasty path...Many feel we are at that point or very close.

on Zine Culture

Zines carry a really amazing middle ground between many art mediums. I find them accessable, interesting and drawing from a wide variety of experience. With the drawings and diary/literature hybrid mix of writing, they are different from a blog. I wish the medium was used by more publishing companies.

My favorite store for zine browsing and buying is, of course, Reading Frenzy (across from Powell's on Burnside in Portland): http://www.readingfrenzy.com/
