on Financial Crises Past and Present

The last time a Republican executive presided over a constitutional crisis in the early 1970's, the U.S. paid the price in terms of wage and real estate stagnation, high fuel prices, inflation, and loss of confidence in the markets. It's a precedent that doesn't bode well, since that recession lasted for most of the 1970's.

The mealy-mouthed political triangulation that nearly sunk Jeff Merkley in the Democratic primary for Senate clearly won't gain any traction against Gordon Smith in the fall. The smartest thing Merkley could do at this point is dump his brain trust and beg Steve Novick to direct the fall campaign.

on The Employment Boom

The work that most desperately needs to be done in our society right now is to fix our crumbling infrastructure. Are baby boomers going to step up to that task, or is it not sexy and fulfilling enough? So far, they haven't even shown their willingness to pay their way, the way their parents taxed themselves to pay for all the benefits the young boomers enjoyed.

on Of Prayer and Penicillin

An article in the Oregonian about this case claimed that Followers used to take their children home from car wrecks rather than to the hospital, in order to heal (or not) at home.
I would have a great deal more sympathy for parents who don't believe in the power of antibiotics and modern surgery for their children, if they at the same time eschewed the power and convenience of 20th-century technology for themselves. What are these same Followers doing driving cars (and using electric appliances and air conditioning) while allowing their children to suffer?
Do they not have enough faith that they will be delivered to work every morning without relying on the temptations of the internal combustion engine?

on Burning Questions

Whatever you think of the ELF and its tactics, the more troubling issue is the Bush Justice Department's priorities, not to mention their own definition of terrorism. So-called "eco-terrorists" whose only crimes are property damage, are targeted as top-priority by federal law enforcement, while violent armed domestic groups such as the Alabama Free Militia and other right-wing racist groups are ignored.
