on The Economics of the Death Penalty

I do not even consider costs in death penalty cases. Some isssues are beyond economics.

A major argument against the death penalty is exradition of suspects from other countries. Consistently other nations will not release suspsecs for this reason.

on Fall of the Berlin Wall

A great living example of the social evolution of Germany is their current president who is not only a woman but also a from East Germany.

on Fall of the Berlin Wall

This is one of the events that reminds me how dificult it is to convey the atmosphere of decades past. The wall and Soviet nuclear weapons shaped our world images for years.   It seems we are still adjusting to the Eurasia map that is stii suffering political shockwaves of the reshaping of Russia.  My father's family is an example.  The region of his ancestors has been called Austria, Czechosovakia, and Slovakia within my lifetime.

on Lottery Profits

If the business is dependent on lottery income to stay open aren't they in violation of the way the lottery revenue is structured. I recall a business being investigated for being too dependent on lottery income.

Are these birds tagged or fitted with monitors of any type?  Is there an estimate how many are lost at sea?

on Suggest a Show

On the front page of Sunday Sep 06 Oregonian's business section is a article a intriguing energy possibilty. Sound like a company may have a competitive means of making ethanol from forest waste.

There is another article that I read once and heard no follow up on in the Oregonian. It is dated Dec 11 08 and speaks to a joint project between NW Natural Gas and the Bonneville Enviromental Foundation to develop a manure digester.

Energy independce will not come from one magic bullet solution bot rather a list of options. Could these be quality choices that are regionally appropriate?

on July Show Ideas

On the last day of Oregon's legislature this year there was a bill passed legalizing the growing of hemp.  The last I heard of it was waiting for and would receive the governor's signature.   It sounds like, in spite of the fact that is still illegal under federal law, the feds have no interest in  interfering. Assuming this law goes forward could this be a cash crop that the gorwers could use to compensate for other crop fluctuations?

In July there was a hemp event in Eugene.  If this becomes a significant crop is there a ready market for this product?  What is its export value?

on End of the Legislative Session

Last year at this time gas prices were significantly higher. At the same time maintainance funds for roadway maintenance keeps falling.  I did not hear any action on adjusting this income source. Woud it be possible to adjust the gas tax to hold the price of gas steady near $3.00 a gallon?  This seems to be the point that affects people's spending habits  and encourage more efficient vehicles.

on The Switch: Biogas

In the THU DEC 11 2008 OREGONIAN you can find an article about a digester project involving Three Mile Canyon Farms, NW Natural Gas, and Bonneville Power.  It is staggering that this type of project is not already commonplace. Just in terms of water supply protection it makes sense. I lived next to a dairy farm near Banks and waste and water was one of the owner's ongoing curses.
