on Our High School

mertz,

I am a Grant parent who supports the redesign. But do believe that the K-8 reorg can't be left out of the redesign process. There are K-8s that are struggling from lack of support from the district. Yes, our experience has also been that communities can and will come back together at new buildings, especially if the communities (staff, parents and neighbors) are allowed into the process of rebuilding.

I'm a parent of a two students in PPS and live in the Grant cluster.  I survived my neighborhood elementary closing three years ago and the reorganization of our new school into a K-8 configuration, which was a painful experience.  Going through that process opened my eyes to what was happening throughout the Portland school district, so I couldn't agree more with muddyriver's first comment above.   Giving stability to all of Portland's schools has to be the driving factor in the redesign.  However, PPS has an enormous task of regaining parent (and staff) trust after years of top-down decision-making with very little planning or community involvement.
