Studio Session: Talkdemonic

For quite some time, OPBMusic has been thinking about taking its show on the road. In the past we’ve recorded sessions at Mississippi Studios and other popular music venues around Portland. This time the crew headed out for one of its first house calls: an interview and four-song set with Talkdemonic at Modest Mouse frontman Issac Brock’s Glacial Pace Studio in Southeast Portland.

Lisa Molinaro and Kevin O’Connor form Talkdemonic, who have been performing music together for more than 10 years. Their unique instrumental sound has undergone a transformation since their first album, Mutiny Sunshine. Four albums later, Ruins is an undulating and dramatic collection of songs that evokes strong, dramatic imagery. The incorporation of synthesized effects and Molinaro’s electrified viola combine with O’Connor’s drums to create a vivid presence not unlike a sweeping movie score.

While hosting us for this OPBMusic session, Molinaro explained that the sound of Ruins isn’t so much a departure from the organic, acoustic style of their early work, but rather an “evolution” that the duo is happy with.
