As a teenager, David Ackerman would use a draft card to get into clubs in New York, where he was growing up. Shows were affordable, so he went out all the time and saw acts such as John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Ornette Coleman, and one of his favorites, legendary bassist, Charles Mingus. One night at the “new” Five Spot, Charles Mingus, shirtless and dressed in lederhosen, began heckling (or was being heckled by) an audience member.
