Nina Simone's legacy is undeniable. The tragic, lauded artist and civil rights activist was one of the greats of her era, a classical pianist (denied education because she was a black female) who began to sing when she resorted to playing in bars. Bar owners assumed she was a singer because of her gender. Her abusive husband served as her manager as she struggled through undiagnosed bi-polar disorder. Nina marched with Dr. Martin Luther King and befriended Malcom X. Her life has been the subject of multiple documentaries (some of them controversial).

Her emotive voice was an agent of change, and her career is the focus of this spectacular homage. LaRhonda Steele is spellbinding in this role with the Adrian Martin Sextet. Known for her warm, bluesy alto and dynamic stage presence, LaRhonda has wowed audiences as one of the most prominent blues vocalists of the Northwest for decades, and like Nina, she's not immune to the trials of life, having battled breast cancer. Paired with Adrian’s soulful, high-energy, classical-meets-jazz sextet, the power of Nina Simone's legacy is bound to shine in glorious light. Featuring Mark Steele on piano (LaRhonda’s husband), multi-instrumentalist Michelle Medler on woodwinds, the solid funk of Leah Hinchcliff on upright and electric basses, and award-winning session man,  Mike Snyder on drums.
