World-renowned trumpeter, Nicholas Payton, was given the opportunity to take a jazz cruise as a trombonist. For the cruise, he picked up a pawn shop trombone and learned to play well enough. He saw two jazz greats play on the cruise: trumpeter Clark Terry and trombonist Al Grey. After the show, Payton made a beeline for Terry but was intercepted by Grey. Grey, thinking Payton was a non-serious trombone player, invited him to his room to show him how to oil his trombone.
