Judge Ann Aiken sentenced Tami Sawyer to 9 years in prison.  The former real estate agent entered a conditional guilty plea in January to 21 counts of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.

Her husband, former Bend Police captain Kevin Sawyer, was sentenced to 27 months.  He also pleaded guilty in January to one count of making a false statement to a financial institution.

The couple was also ordered to pay nearly $6 million  in restitution to their victims.

According to a 2010 grand jury indictment, the Sawyers began taking advantage of investors during the run-up to the once red-hot real estate market.

Prosecutors say the Sawyers used money that was supposed to go toward real estate transactions instead to pay for cars, credit card bills and even a vacation home in Mexico.

The Sawyers are now awaiting word from the Bureau of Prisons on where they will serve their sentences.
