The 14th Dalai Lama told people who turned out to see him in Portland audience Saturday to turn their attention to the health of the planet.
He hosted an environmental summit attended by thousands from around the region.
The Dalai Lama described how his own worldview changed when he left Tibet under political persecution at the age of 24.
“I’m always telling people. I, 1959, come from Tibet, escaped to India. Okay. But now, whole world…. There’s no other place [to] escape. This is only home! We have to take care.”
The assembled panel included Governor John Kitzhaber, Senator Jeff Merkley, and local environmental activists.
They called for action on climate change, toxic exposures, and other issues of concern.
