Students in the Eugene-Springfield area plan to leave school Wednesday as part of a national walkout that will call on lawmakers to pass stricter gun-control legislation.

Many of the walkouts will begin at 10 a.m. in each time zone and last for 17 minutes in honor of the 17 victims of the Feb. 14 Parkland, Fla., high school shooting.

The walkouts also will take place at universities, including the University of Oregon.

South Eugene High School student Maya Corral said the school’s walkout will be a “peaceful walkout (and) march to promote gun control.”
