The Zadoff family from Portland watches the demolition of Historic Hayward Field’s East Grandstand.

The legacy of the East Grandstand at Hayward Field took decades to build.

It only took a day to knock it down.

A team of construction workers fired up excavators and began the demolition of the 93-year-old East Grandstand about 7 a.m. Friday. By 5 p.m. the wooden structure was a pile of rubble.

Throughout the day, sounds of destruction echoed through neighborhoods near the University of Oregon. The largest timbers created booms as loud as thunder when they hit the ground.
