Hermiston City Manager Brookshier Finalist For Cornelius Job

Hermiston City Manager Ed Brookshier has been named one of four finalists for the job as city manager for Cornelius, Ore.

The others include Scott Somers, currently the Reedsport City Manager; Jay Henry, the former City Manager in Talent; and Rob Drake, Interim City Manager in Carlton.

Hermiston City Councilman Rod Hardin said Saturday morning that while he was not aware that Brookshier had been named a finalist in Cornelius, he knew Hermiston’s city manager had been applying for jobs elsewhere.

“I’m aware that he’s sending out resumes,” Hardin said. “I’ve had people call me for references.”

Hardin also said he is not surprised by Brookshier’s decision to apply for other positions. Hardin said recent recall discussions by the Hermiston Government Reform Committee, a recently formed group, may have pushed Brookshier to consider leaving the town he has served for the last 20 years.

“If this recall thing blows up, he doesn’t want to be left hanging out to dry,” Hardin said. “I understand his position. He wants to work some more years, and we’ve been hearing the recall is not so much about getting rid of the council as it is about him.”

The Hermiston City Council voted in October to extend Brookshier’s contract another year, putting him under contract with the city through December 2013.

“The biggest outcry I’ve heard over the last year is about renewing his contract,” Hardin said.

Brookshier currently makes $109,132 in annual salary. His total benefits package, including salary, is worth $154,469.

If Brookshier were to leave Hermiston on his own volition for another job, he would not receive any of the severance package and the city would not owe him any money for the remainder of his contract.

Cornelius is looking for a replacement for Dave Waffle, who was fired by the City Council last June on a 3-2 vote. Cornelius ended up paying Waffle approximately $110,000 for his severance package.

Waffle was ousted by a group within the council known as “Team 3.” In September, all Team 3 members - Mayor Neal Knight and city councilors Jamie Minshall and Mari Gottwald - were recalled by voters.

Brookshier could not be reached for comment by the Herald on Saturday.

Cornelius is a town of about 12,000 people in Washington County.
