Lane County Jail A Revolving Door For Some

University of Oregon campus police caught a man early Sunday with a stolen bike, bolt cutters, marijuana and heroin.

They let the 26-year-old transient go with a citation for misdemeanor offenses.

Eugene police were too busy to take over the case at the time, and everyone knew there was little point in taking him to jail.

The Register-Guard reports the same man was convicted in October of heroin and methamphetamine possession, sentenced to 120 days in jail and released the next day. He was arrested again Nov. 4 for a parole violation and released a short time later.

The Lane County Jail has no room for nonviolent offenders after closing 96 beds in June for budgetary reasons. It’s closing another 35 beds on Thursday.
