Portland Man Killed By Tree In Oregon Coast Wind Storm

Oregon State Police are continuing Wednesday evening’s investigation into a single-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 26 in Clatsop County caused by the severe windstorm.

According to Senior Trooper Lewis Topinka, on March 9 at about 6:01 p.m., OSP troopers and emergency responders were dispatched to Highway 26 near milepost 5 for a reported single-vehicle fatal crash. Once on scene, troopers found that a 2008 Toyota FJC, operated by Nicholas J. Harris, age 37, from Portland, was traveling westbound when a large alder tree came down from the west side of the highway and fell on top of his vehicle. Harris suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

OSP troopers from Astoria Area Command are continuing the investigation. The highway was closed for about for two and a half hours during the investigation.

OSP was assisted by the Seaside Fire Department, Hamlet Fire Department, Medix and Oregon Department of Transportation.
