Oregon officials have been given the green light to kill California sea lions at Willamette Falls in the effort to save endangered salmon and steelhead.

State officials said sea lions eat about a quarter of the Upper Willamette winter steelhead run at the falls in Oregon City, pushing them dangerously close to extinction.

The National Marine Fisheries Service approved lethal removal Thursday, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
