Workers represented by Lane County government’s largest labor union went on strike Wednesday, the first employee walkout at the county by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in 38 years.
Dozens of striking workers held signs and chanted slogans on Wednesday morning outside the county’s Health and Human Services building on West Seventh Avenue and Charnelton Street.
County administrators and leaders of AFSCME Local 2831 failed to resolve their differences in overnight negotiations that involved a mediator. The impasse led the union to strike.
“We’re willing to continue to negotiate, but at this time, they have walked form the table,” AFSCME Local 2831 President LaRece Rivera, said of county officials.
