Oregon Universities Growing At Twice The National Rate

Enrollment in Oregon’s public universities has grown faster than in any other state in the country. Rob Manning has more on a national study out Tuesday.

The last five years have seen Oregon’s universities grow by 36 percent – more than twice the national average.

That’s the conclusion of a new study from the State Higher Education Executive Officers, based in Boulder, Colorado.

The group’s president, Paul Lingenfelter, says Oregon’s rapid growth comes as state investment is below the national average, and tuition is rising.

“If people get the idea if tuition is going up, institutions have more money to spend – the fact is, that’s not the case. In the last four years, spending per student from all sources of revenue in Oregon has been substantially less than it was over the previous 15 or 20 years.”

Lingenfelter says Oregon has gained national attention for its lofty graduation goals. But he says insufficient funding could make the long-term goals harder to reach.
