Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to airports, because Portland International Airport has once again been voted the top U.S. airport by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.

It’s the sixth consecutive time that the magazine’s readers have handed PDX the honor. According to the magazine, reasons cited by people who voted for the top airport include the user-friendliness of the terminal, efficient and friendly security checkpoints, a good selection of food vendors, shops that offer local and affordable goods, convenient parking and a variety of entertainment options for people waiting for a flight.

Travel + Leisure readers also gave a nod to PDX travelers’ unusual obsession with foot-on-carpeting selfies with the airport’s old carpet (which has its own Facebook page).

Port of Portland officials credited the airport’s employees for the honor. “The credit for this accomplishment goes to our Portland International Airport team — the more than 10,000 who always deliver the best travel experience you’ll find anywhere,” said Curtis Robinhold, Port of Portland executive director. “The caring spirit of our PDX team, served up with local restaurants and shops, gives PDX its much-loved heart and character, reflecting the very best our region offers.”
