Hundreds of Oregonians gathered in downtown Portland on Saturday June 6, 2015 for the 2015 Portland Rose Festival, an annual tradition of Portland that dates back to the early 20th century.
The festivities included the annual Grand Floral Parade, where this year’s Rose Court was crowned. People could participate in fleet week, where U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships docked on the downtown waterfront and opened their galleys to the public for tours and presentations.
The parade was led by Oregon Governor Kate Brown and former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts. Roberts was the first female governor of Oregon and current Governor Brown is considered the first openly LGBT governor in the nation.
The theme of the parade was Women in Leadership. Gov. Brown was recently named one of the top 40 ‘Most Interesting Women In Politics,’ by The Washington Post.
Some of the top floats and events in the parade included the Portland Mounted Police, the Jefferson High School Marching Band, Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and the Oregon Mayors Marching Group, the Vietnamese Community Float of Oregon, and the famous Budweiser Clydesdales.
