Mexican government officials in Portland this week launched a first-of-its-kind initiative: “Outstanding Mexicans.” They say its goal is to empower immigrants after a negative presidential campaign.

A group of Mexican speakers shared their stories at the Armory at the Portland Center Stage. Among them was Starbucks senior designer Víctor Meléndez, world boxing champion Ricardo "Finito" Lopez, former professional basketball player Eduardo Nájera and local leaders Victoria Lara and Alberto Moreno.

Government official Sofia Orozco says this event is part of a plan to reach out to the Mexican communities in the U.S. and let them know the Mexican government supports them.

"The objective is to promote empowerment to the community in this country if another Mexican people listen this kind of successful stories, they may feel inspired,” Orozco said.

“Outstanding Mexicans” will be replicated in New York, Dallas and Houston during the first months of 2017.
