Strickland played two seasons on the PSU basketball team and had joined the football team for the upcoming season.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Deante," said Portland State director of athletics Valerie Cleary. "He represented everything it means to be a Viking in his hometown of Portland."

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler also tweeted out his support for the family, without mentioning victims by name.

"Our hearts go out to the families impacted by the triple shooting in NE Portland," Wheeler said in the tweet. "We are grieving with you."

The two other victims — both female, according to police — received medical attention, including one person who was struck multiple times. Police described their injuries as “not life-threatening.”

Late Friday evening police arrested Tamena Strickland on a murder charge, and two counts of attempted murder. The arrest appears to confirm earlier reports that the shooting involved family members. Eyewitnesses described a woman leaving the scene of the shooting in a light-colored SUV, possibly with a child inside.
