The United Nations is expected to announce Wednesday that the City of Portland has been chosen to help host “World Environment Day” on June 5.
It’s an annual event that’s been celebrated since 1973.
The UN’s website says the aim is to make June 5 the biggest and most widely celebrated day for positive environmental action.
The theme this year is: “Think. Eat. Save.” The UN wants to encourage people to waste less food and reduce their “food-print.”
In 2011, Portland launched a new curbside trash service that includes weekly collection of food scraps. After a year, the city found the garbage collected decreased by about 38 percent.
