Construction crews will start repairing the historic Benson Bridge at Multnomah Falls Monday. The plans are to have it all fixed by Memorial Day Weekend.
Last year, a falling rock damaged the bridge, and since then, it’s been closed to pedestrians for safety reasons. Now, a company from Battle Ground, Washington has a three hundred nineteen thousand dollar contract to repair and renovate the bridge.
Jennifer Kevil is with the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. She says with the tourist season coming up, work crews are working hard to finish the bridge in time.
“So we’ve been working really hard since January to make sure that repairs were don’t and completed by Memorial Day weekend, so that folks can come and visit the iconic site and have the experience that they’re used to having.”
Kevil says the Wahkeena to Multnomah Falls hiking loop is not open because of the construction. The hike to the top of the falls is not open either.
Visitors are cautioned to be aware of construction activities at the site and know which areas will be closed.
