Uber Launches in Portland Suburbs, But Not Portland

The rideshare app Uber announced today it is launching in four cities in the Portland metro area. They are Tigard, Hillsboro, Gresham, and Beaverton.
The app connects people looking for a ride to nearby drivers. It lets users pay for rides using stored credit card information.
Spokeswoman Eva Behrend  says the service, which is called Uber X, requires its drivers to go through a background check and a car inspection.
“Uber X drivers are people using their own vehicles, during their own personal time for as little or as much as they want. Vehicles do need to be 2005 or newer and four doors.”
Uber operates in more than 200 cities around the world including  Salem, Eugene, Vancouver, and Seattle.
Portland currently bans non-taxi ride services like Uber.  But the City’s Department of Transportation says it is overhauling its taxi rules and regulations, and might consider ridesharing services in the future.
