The University of Oregon plans to start building the $2.2 million Black Cultural Center on the eastern edge of campus this summer and open it before the 2019-20 school year.
Still in its design phase, the two-story, 3,500-square-foot building would meet a 2015 demand by the UO’s Black Student Task Force.
“One of the demands was to have a place where (black) students could congregate, where they could learn from each other, (where) they could share experiences on the campus,” said Kevin Marbury, the UO’s vice president of student life.
The building will be built near East 15th Avenue and Villard Street.
