UO Holds Forum On Arming Campus Police

At a Monday night forum on arming University of Oregon police, many students opposed bringing guns on campus, but law enforcement officials said guns are a needed tool.

The Register-Guard reports students who spoke said they feel the campus is relatively safe, and guns aren’t needed, given the nature of university crimes.

Lane County District Attorney Alex Gardner backed up university and Eugene police officials who said the potential for serious crime on campus is real. He said there’s about a homicide a month in the county, and that rapes and gang activity are high. Garner said, “This is just not Mayberry.”

The university police department has 13 officers. They have to call Eugene police when they confront a serious suspect.
