Vanport is often pictured by people as a city which faced a biblical fate and was swept away by a flood during in the late 1940’s.
But Vanport is also remembered as a town built almost overnight to house an influx of migrant workers who came to Portland to work during a World War II production boom.
Portland journalist Laura Lo Forti says the story of Vanport is much richer than it’s often presented. Lo Forti calls herself the “story midwife” of Vanport, and she’s helped birth a rich collection of oral histories from the area called the “Vanport Mosaic.”
She joined OPB’s John Sepulvado for this week’s Sunday Conversation.
