Crater Lake National Park

A wildfire burning west of Crater Lake National Park has grown to more than 720 acres and is only 10 percent contained, but the park remains open.

Fire officials said West Rim Drive could be intermittently closed over the next couple of days. Visitors can bypass it by taking East Rim Drive. The fire has led to the partial closure of the Pacific Crest Trail from Dutton Creek Camp to Red Cone Springs.

Lucinda Nolan of the South Central Oregon Incident Management Team tells The Register-Guard the fire is mostly burning dead and downed trees from a decade-old blaze, and crews have kept it from moving near the lake.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. An incident management team press release over the weekend indicated it was likely an escaped campfire.
