Oregon’s about to have its very own royal wedding, of sorts: Gov. John Kitzhaber and his longtime partner, Cylvia Hayes, are engaged.
OPB’s Salem reporter Chris Lehman confirmed the engagement Monday, but apparently the two have been engaged for a couple of weeks. There is no announced date for the wedding.
This will be Kitzhaber’s third marriage: He was previously married in the 1970s and later in the 1990s. Both unions ended in divorce.
Hayes, 46, lives with the governor in Portland and has served as Oregon’s first lady since Kitzhaber took office for his third term in 2011. The Oregonian reports that the two started dating after Hayes ran and lost for a state House seat in Bend in 2002.
Hayes is now a sustainability consultant and a senior fellow at the Clean Economy Development Center.
Capitol gossips are buzzing with questions over the first lady’s dress (will it be a Columbia Sportswear original?), the location (may we suggest a Hood River orchard?), and who will cater the big event (a fleet of food carts, perhaps?).
