Voters have chosen Charlie Hales as Portland’s next mayor. Unofficial results show Hales coasting to a 62 percent lead over Jefferson Smith, with a significant write-in vote at nearly 8 percent.

Hales promised in his victory speech to minimize the drama and maximize results.

“I want to say to everyone who voted for me, and everyone who didn’t that I will work every day for the next four years to make you as proud of your city’s leadership as you are of Portland,” he said.

Hales’ return to City Hall will be something of a homecoming. He spent ten years on City Council during the 90s, leaving for an executive job at a large engineering firm.

Hales low-key style carried him through a contentious primary. In the general election, his opponent Smith lost momentum after revelations that he hit a woman, in an incident at a 1993 college party.
