It would be premature to say that Oregon’s largest wildfire is winding down.
But with 38 percent of the Chetco Bar Fire contained and rain in the forecast, officials felt confident enough to lift a number of evacuations near Brookings and the Illinois Valley in southern Oregon.
Officials lifted all level 3 evacuation levels in the Brookings and Illinois River Road area, allowing more than 4,000 people displaced to return home.
A precautionary level 1 evacuation level for the Illinois Valley, which simply meant “get ready,” was also removed.
