Oregon has had a “challenging” fire season this year, State Forester Peter Dougherty told several legislative committees Monday.
But most of the cost will fall to the federal government.
The Oregon Department of Forestry provides fire protection for 16 million acres of public and private forestland in the state. The federal government is responsible for the rest.
So far this year, fires have scorched 42,000 acres of state-protected lands
